Run of the House
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly . . . Col. 3:16 ESV

When I was growing up, the phrase "run of the house" usually referred to someone -- particularly an undisciplined child -- who usurped parental authority and seemingly set all the rules in the home. So you can imagine that Eugene H. Peterson's translation of Col. 3:16 in The Message brought me some initial discomfort:
"let the word of God have the run of the house."
But out of that uneasiness, a beautiful depiction of the Word as Jesus Christ emerged. He is to be welcomed into the home of my heart, free to explore, to bless, to live in every nook and cranny of this dwelling. No room is closed off from His love, His grace, His mercy, His forgiveness.
So how about you -- does God's Word have the run of your house?
